Year 5 First Aid Club
First aid club takes place with Mrs Harries, Miss Oates and Miss Peters every Thursday after school from 3.40pm to 4.20pm for Year 5 pupils.
What do we do?
In Year 5 First Aid Club we teach pupils basic first aid skills. Pupils learn how to assess the situation for risks and hazards, how to carry out the DRAB routine in a first response scenario, and how to deal with choking and asthma attacks.
On Wednesday 8th February, a proposal to make lifesaving skills compulsory in the school curriculum was debated by AMs in the Welsh Assembly. To highlight the importance of this, Birchgrove First Aid Club made their TV debut on BBC Wales news. Click here to see the video.
Asthma. Today we learned what to do if someone was having an asthma attack. We learned what may trigger an attack and the best way to respond to a person who has difficulty breathing.
Week 2: First Response
Week 2: Today we practiced first response to an accident. We practiced the DRAB routine (Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing) and we learned how to put an unconscious breathing casualty into the recovery position.
Today we looked at Hazards and Risks. We talked about what could be a hazard and how we could minimize risks.
