Learning Log Challenge - Scream Machine
As part of our topic work in Year 5, we are now moving on to study forces and roller coasters.
Oakwood theme park are seeking, a range of new and innovative roller coasters for their theme park simply called ‘Scream’. As chief engineers you have been given the opportunity to design and make a concept ‘Scream Machine’ to be considered for Oakwood’s park. Using what you have learned about materials and forces you must plan and design a concept model for a new ride. If you would like to, you can also make this final design.
To be successful in this task, you must:
• Research the forces used in roller coasters.
Use the force of gravity in your design;
• Consider how you might use another force as part of your ride;
• Create a presentation to explain how it works;
• Label all parts of your design, including the forces at work.
Pupils need to research this in detail and present their findings in an interesting and attractive way. They are limited to using a double page only in their books, although they may be creative in ways to extend their space e.g. fold out pages, envelopes, pop outs etc. Think back to creative examples you might have seen in other Learning Logs and how you could improve on your previous attempts.
We would appreciate it if you could support your child with this challenge and we can’t wait to see the results!
